Cofounded by Maria Thomas and Rick Roberts, Zentangle became popular among artists and non-artists alike, because of its nature of beautiful simplicity that incorporates both the stroke of a pen and the state of relaxation. Creating a Zentangle is an easy to understand process of simple deliberate strokes that build on each other in beautiful and mesmerizing ways.

How can this meditational art form help me?

Zentangle’s non-verbal language of patterns and proportions can open doors to insights that seemed locked before, allowing you to enter a meditative state in which intuitive insights flow freely; ideas and answers are unhindered by expectations or worries. You can transfer this insight and experience of success and accomplishment to any life experience. It increases focus, relaxation, through deliberate mark-making and invention.

You Can Do Anything, One Stroke at a Time™  – Maria & Rick

We are always making “strokes” (thoughts, words, deeds) in our life. By taking Zentangle’s inspiration to make each stroke deliberate, you understand how those apparently small and insignificant “strokes” of our moment-to-moment lives contribute to your life’s pattern.

Using the Zentangle “no eraser” concept in life helps you understand that even if you make what seems to be a mistake, you can take that event and build a new pattern allowing you to go in unexpected and exciting new directions.

Zentangle’s results are beautiful and inspire further self-confidence and creativity. Zentangle leaves a trail of creativity and beauty you can revisit whenever you want.

What is the Zentangle method?

  • Explores the potential of pattern, line, and positive and negative space through mindful and focused pattern drawing

  • Is an easy to learn art form that is fun and relaxing

  • Based on repetitive patterns that when combined create beautiful images

  • Can be practiced by all ages and skill levels

  • Does not require special drawing talents

  • A Zentangle tile is 3 ½ inches square, is designed to be completed in one sitting. In so doing, you get an immediate sense of accomplishment.  You can finish one in about 15 minutes.

  • Zentangle is so unique and simple that you can create one with either hand. Many studies show using your non-dominant hand activates different brain circuitry, increasing creativity and your ability to problem solve.
